Going Home is No Vacation

This is "Tony", he is from Guatemala and recycles goods in bins left on the street to make a living. I see Tony a few times a week in the neighborhood.

Salmon

"Salmon are amazing water creatures. Born in our rivers, they mature in the ocean and return to their birthplace to reproduce. During their time offshore, they may travel more than 2,000 miles across the ocean; some reach the coast of Siberia. As each returns toward it's home estuary, it somehow detects the "fingerprint" scent of the river that it must follow back to it's birthplace. Salmon noses can detect the identifying substances in concentrations as low as one part per 3,000,000,000,000,000,000!" - From Introduction to Water in California - David Carle

Before, After and Now What?

Well, the one month of documenting phase is over! I was out everyday with a lapse of a few days missed sporadically, but i feel comfortable stating that I captured about 85%-90% of "home" items placed in the urban landscape by people in the community. The project will continue to the next phase. The images in this section are items which have been previously documented from the time I started this project on July 14, 2010 which still remain on the street/ sidewalk/ lawn etc. as of August 14, 2010. You can scroll down previous entries in the blog to locate these items. As an overall average, most items spent 10-12 days in their place.

This little bookcase has been here since July 16, 2010. It seems to be missing the fast food soda cups that were once placed on it.

Sporting tie dye from August 6, 2010. Only the back cushion has been taken.

On July 17, 2010 there was a stockpile of goods here. One lone single is still here and a lounge chair has been added on August 14, 2010 to the collection.

I like the color green...i guess not all people do. This lounge chair is on a journey. It has moved down the same street it was first placed on July 26, 2010.

Sofa and Dresser....first found August 2, 2010.

The remnants of what used to be a dresser, this item moved to the other side of the street and was originally posted on July 27, 2010.

I guess computers have rendered this filing cabinet obsolete. Photographed on August 6, 2010.

Originally photographed on August 6, 2010...table base gone...rolls of carpet and orange lounge chairs added later.
I am sure this rocking chair has heard many stories. It remains dismantled amongst foliage since July 16, 2010.

On July 22, 2010 this sofa was in fairly good condition. I have watched it get pulled apart and used.
The term carcass comes to mind with this pink recliner which is in dire need of a proper burial. Has it committed a sin and forced to be pecked by vultures? This recliner probably was a couch potatoes haven at some point in life. Unlike a living creatures body, this piece will not decompose anytime soon. It has been at the front of a new building, which has been almost finished for nearly 10 months, since July 14, 2010.

Still up for grabs since August 10, 2010.

...August 13, 2010...I can just remember something about David Lynch, Twin Peaks, The Red Room and utterings regarding a Formica table...it's blurry...

If you put the mattress along a fence maybe nobody will notice...since August 13, 2010.

Not so bad, from August 13, 2010 to August 14, 2010 the single bedframe has been taken - packing tape at joints and all. VERY large empty television and broken mirror may have a harder time.

Near Charles Bukowski's old pad on August 2, 2010. Still there.

First photographed on July 16, 2010. Sans seat cushion, with embroidered hat and plastic bags. It moved down the block a little.

Who needs televisions? But...most people need/like socks. Originally taken with socks on August 13, 2010.

On August 2, 2010 this red sofa was in decent condition. Now it's been tagged and torn.

Sofa hanging out since August 6, 2010.

What is left of a desk first documented on August 10, 2010.

The sofa in the background has been balancing itself since July 23, 2010. Seat cushions have been taken.

Once on the corner on August 7, 2010 a few pieces of this cabinet were apparently useful for something or somebody....the remains moved off of the corner a few feet down the street.

With the seat cushion gone from the time it was placed on the sidewalk on August 13, 2010 this forest green leather lounge chair seems to be into American football.

The dining chairs from August 13, 2010 have been taken in exchange for this lounge chair.

Originally taken on August 13, 2010....this is self explanatory.

From July 17, 2010...with the addition of a white wicker chair.

Nothing has changed much from August 13, 2010....except for an addition of a partially drawerless dresser.

From July 17, 2010 this upholstered good has managed to change positions only. Downward Facing Dog anybody?

I guess for a moment somebody was considering the top mattress but changed their mind. Photographed first on August 7, 2010.

This loveseat never had a chance....it was found gutted on August 4, 2010...only now it is blocking the sidewalk.

Back (less) view of above loveseat....if it were a dress it may have been considered sexy.

On July 17, 2010 this piece was accompanied by a pink cushion. It sits by itself now waiting for destiny. At least it has a pole to lean on.

Mattress springs have been pulled out along with the filling...this has been here since July 17, 2010 and has been flipped over.

From August 13, 2010.

The television is sleeping....it has been standing here since July 23, 2010.

This sofa was first sighted on July 15, 2010. Still in the same spot, faded from the sun. The shopping cart is a new addition.

Aside from missing seat cushions, this pair are hoping they still have a chance to make it somewhere. I wouldn't say it is completely hopeless...they have only been waiting since August 7, 2010.

"But the most daring thing is to create stable communities in which the terrible disease of loneliness can be cured.” Kurt Vonnegut

Without a doubt, my favorite find...amazing. When I was in Istanbul, Turkey one of the things I noticed was loaves of bread placed randomly everywhere.
